Street Lights Look Like Pollen Grains

Latest song from me. In the past few months I've been listening to a variety of genres. Not many know that I started rapping when I was 12 (Where is the Love by Black-Eyed Peas). This time I'm challenging myself to write/play something different. I always strum my guitar. It's like the only thing I'm confident about. But it's getting boring, to be honest. Street Lights Look Like Pollen Grains is an experiment to pick up some courage of trying something new. It was played with a very simple chord progression and writing the lyrics took a shorter time than trying to sing and rap to it without any mistakes. Overall, it was a simple song, but I'm glad I have very supportive friends in my life. I never really realised about this before. They are my lyrics.

Songwriting and playing guitar have taught me so many beautiful things. I can't tell you exactly what's the purpose of my works, but I can tell you that these are the things that keep me going. When you do something out of love and nothing else, the feeling is spectacular, regardless of the outcome.

Singing is Hard

I wish I have a bunch of people who could help me to sing my songs. Y'know, like a band or something, with all the drummer and bassist and solo guitarist and keyboardist. Then I can sit back a little and just write lyrics. Ah, did I forget to mention a singer? Yep, that one too. So I can just become some second rhythm guitarist or sit behind the scenes, like a band manager or something. But I don't think band managers do write lyrics.

Anyway, I'm back here because as usual, I'm announcing that I wrote a song. I know I write crappy songs but maybe it's better to write crappy songs compared to not having the courage to pick up a pencil and write crappy songs in the first place. The best thing that could happen is someone may have your song ringing in their head, or your songs will be always there to be listened to even after you lose your skills (or your life) and the worst, well, maybe you'll be like Rebecca Black, but boy, that's not that bad at all. Man, I love babbling.

My junior once told me I have a weird accent. Hahah. I have to agree with her.

Anyway, this song is a dedication song (a.k.a a friendship song I guess), written after a friend (Hi friendddd!) challenged me to write a song. And also after I packed all my college stuff (like notes of encouragements and all those stuff that makes me emo) into a shoebox and promised to myself that I'll cherish those memories and not cling to them like what I've always been doing before.

(Don't) Open the Box

LYRICS

[Verse 1]
Don't open the box
of the memories you stored,
don't let the stories be retold.

Take down the frame
from your tallest wall of joy,
nothing's ever gonna be the same.

[Pre-chorus 1]
And the cobwebs surround you,
wrapping around you,
screaming, forget everything,
forget everything.

But you know
that the chords that we strummed
will ring in our ears,
will ring in our ears forever.

[Chorus]
(And) one day you're gonna open the box,
you're gonna pick up that frame,
you're gonna smile at your smile
in the pictures with them.

You're gonna say to yourself
although we're miles away
and we can't get back to that day,
Oh the friendship will forever stay
in this heart of mine.
(I had a wonderful time with them,
in this heart of mine).
(And the friendship will forever stay
in this heart of mine).

[Verse 2]
Brush off the dirt
stuck on your shoes
as you're dragging your feet to move out.

Wipe every dust stuck on your spectacles,
blurring your eyes from
what's ahead.

[Pre-chorus 2]
And the dark clouds surround you,
pouring drops of emptiness,
screaming,
"Forget everything."

But you know that the jokes that we shared
are gonna linger forever,
forever,
in the air.

[Repeat chorus]

It's named Don't Open the Box with that bracket because, uh, (trying to be philosophical..), you can see it as a) Don't open the box or b) Open the box. My songs always start with something negative, then something happy. I do it the Fee style. Hahah.

And I was trying to imitate one of my favourite Thai music videos about the "No studio, no skills, no problem" part, so yeah, bear with me.

I'm currently away from social media except blog and YouTube, and I'm not sharing this anywhere else, so I'm away from the privilege of curious clicks. I hope friends who stumbled upon this will be able to receive my appreciation conveyed through the lyrics, so yeah, thanks for the friendship.

Completed at 5am, 27th Oct. 2013, played in the key of C, recorded at 1am, 1st Nov. 2013 after 10 continuous attempts.

Did I tell you singing low is as hard as singing high? Or maybe I should say I don't have a girl voice or a guy voice. I have a voice and an accent with no identities. Goodness gracious.

Forgotten Dreams

Forgotten Dreams
For the things and people we forget, or try to forget.

Lots of photos, lots of questions
Unresolved doubts and appreciation
Let's not let goodbye be the final word
'Cause some things remain unheard

Resentment, anger, promises, tears
are these the only things we've been learning for years?
That morning the fog swallowed an innocent dream
A hope long gone, swept down the stream

Can you see a new beginning?
When the wind sweeps away an ending,
an ending too difficult to comprehend?

Will you see a new beginning?
Even when the rain is pouring,
holding you back to where you used to stand?

In this journey of forgotten dreams
We will be able to laugh, or will we scream?
I'll let you seep away all the tears
and all the stories we'll be hiding for years

Millimetres to Fall

So..the moment I thought I should stop writing songs, I wrote another one. It was originally a line mentioned by my friend when I was standing near a drain one afternoon in January. "Millimetres to Fall" sounded nice as a song title, I thought to myself.

I'm back from the holidays now. Uploaded the song on YouTube just a day after composing it, as I was rushing before I had to head back here. This is definitely not the best recording I could have done, and not as good as "Silence" which is still my favourite.

Millimetres to Fall is a song about falling. Nothing hidden inside the lyrics. It's just plain, simple and a bit emo, but it's an honest stuff from me.

And sorry for the loud vocals. I ain't good at singing.

I didn't bring my guitar here. I'll have to endure another month without a guitar. Sad, but I guess I have a lot of proving and sacrificing to be made. Ah well. Life goes on.

Silence

Honestly I never thought of writing another song after three months of not being able to do so. I was thinking like "uh, that's it, looks like this is the end of my songwriting journey", after about five failed attempts during the past months. Failed attempts, according to my definition in songwriting, is when I kind of figured out a line or two, but couldn't continue due to various reasons. The top three things that can stop me from continuing are:
  1. When I can't rhyme the endings of the lines into something that makes sense.
  2. When I can't figure out a theme on what I am about to write.
  3. When chord progressions sound so familiar like my previous songs, or some other songs that I've listened to.
Writing "Silence" has been a fun journey, and no matter how many views will I get from this one, I'm still going to love it like my "Smell the Rain" and "Raindrops in My Summer". Although previously I was skeptical about the lyrics (yes, that happens all the time) I kind of love this new stuff - no mushy mushy I miss you love you thank you kind of thingy. Haha. However I have to admit that the skeptical side of me senses that the lyrics somehow doesn't make any sense at all.

Some parts are written based on my emotions, some by observation on what has happened to the people around me. Although completed in one sitting, it wasn't actually something that came into my mind instantly. Empty playground with a broken swing is not something new, in fact it came in August from an emo moment when I was walking aimlessly around my hostel. I managed to make it into the pre-chorus of my abandoned song, "That Familiar Place", but in the end decided that it was something terribly mushy.

Yet all I see is a playground
with a broken swing,
and all I hear is
the songs we used to sing.

Uh, I'm writing these descriptions as if I'm one of the members of The Beatles. Like errrr, who knows, some people leave legacies when they leave. I'm scared of being forgotten, haha. Just thinking that if you want to wait until you're great enough to share something, that moment will never come.

To those who are curious.
It's always like this.

I watch documentaries about dead songwriters, awesome how these kind of papers can become valuable when you're dead and your songs get popular. Teehee.

My silent bandmate says thanks for listening/reading.
(Sounds like the two components of IELTS) :P
Till we meet again in another song, hopefully can lah, before I burn my damaged guitar during one of my imaginary mini concerts. Uh.

Hope this song won't make me look so emo. Don't take it seriously, please.

Silence

Silence
30th Nov 2012

Verse 1
An empty playground with a broken swing
A tiny room with a fan spinning
A thousand faces on the wall smiling
and the clock is ticking

(Ohkay, that's a super lame verse to begin with...)

Verse 2
Watching the sunset with a broken guitar in your hand
Scribbling a paper, with the things you can't stand
Maybe your silence is a sign of moving on
Perhaps silence is about staying strong

Pre-chorus 1
What if silence is a screaming child
Sometimes in silence you sing for a while
because that is when you start to smile
When you know that you need to keep walking another mile

Chorus
Some say silence is like sun rays shining through the leaves
when you wake up in the morning, you have something to believe in
You might say silence is when everyone sleeps
Maybe it's just the time when we choose to listen and to not speak

Verse 3
Singing songs that everyone sings
Realising there's not much time left to say out the things
that you never really wanted to hide
'cause your words might force you to swallow your pride

Pre-chorus 2
What if silence is a kid in hunger?
Or a group of people living in anger?
Broken families, and enemies
What if silence is what it takes to have peace

Chorus
Some say silence is like sun rays shining through the leaves
when you wake up in the morning, you have something to believe in
You might say silence is when everyone sleeps
Maybe it's just the time when we choose to listen and to not speak

________________________________________________________________

I'm recording this. Because it's not a song about crushes or memories or friendship.

It's a song about fighting battles when everything seems so distant.

Oh wait, that sounds emo.

Haha.

The First of July

This one came straight away from the heart within 30 minutes.

THE FIRST OF JULY
an anthem of a champion

I'm singing on the first of July
Strum my guitar, got a new song to try
Got my papers, got my books on my bed
The things you said kept on ringing in my head

So I said to July
Make me stronger
Let me give it a try
Stop me from saying that I wanna die
Help me walk with my head held high

(And you said)
Don't walk away, just don't be defeated
Nothing is easy when you've just got started
Work hard at it, and you will find
That everything will turn out to be fine

I can't promise I'll be this way forever
I just wanna get up and say
that I'm not a loser!

So I said to July
Make me stronger
Let me give it a try
Stop me from saying that I wanna die
Help me walk with my head held high
_____________________________________________

I'm ready for the pain next semester. It's alright. At least I still have the chance to prove that I'm not a loser.

Thank you, you, for making me feel a lot better.

The RJP

I can get overly unrealistic sometimes, but hey, I deserve some fun. Expect more of these kind of stuff, especially at these times when I feel like exploding and I need my attention to be diverted from severe emonism.

Support my album, people. Will be available in stores near to you soon.

Summer and Raindrops

I can feel that this is going to be my last original song for the time being, particularly because it's not normal for me to have new ideas in a continuous period of time. The most I can do so far is to write one song per month, and I'm not aiming to go beyond that.

Thank you for those who have been following my songs, despite having to bear with my awful vocals. I appreciate their courage in clicking the play button.

Till we meet again, sometime, someday.

Fee.

Song Number 8

So there was this sudden tune in my mind when I strummed some random chords a few days ago.

Started taking it seriously on the 18th and managed to complete it on the 20th.

Like most of the songs I've written before, this is just another simple song which won't really stick in people's minds. The reason I keep on doing this is simple - when you really love doing something, you don't need to find a reason why you keep going on, because no matter what the outcome is, you've enjoyed what you've done. Let's just say I'm one of those people who enjoys expressing thoughts and feelings through words and music. The ones who have the desire to be noticed but unnoticed at the same time. Hmm. I've just found a sentence I can use to describe myself.

Enough with the long-windedness, here you go:

RAINDROPS IN MY SUMMER

Verses:
You
came into my life just like a morning dew
sunset with a purple hue
Just like a dream
yet so true

You
make my heart skip a beat or two
hum songs that make my days brand new
Make me tap my feet
'cause in my heart there's a tune

Pre-chorus:
Do you know the feeling?
Dancing on the dry leaves I'm stepping
Walking on a sunny day
The strong breeze hits my face

Chorus:
You might be the raindrops in my summer
But don't you know you're the sunshine in my winter too
The sounds of wind in autumn are your whispers
As the flowers bloom I see your smiles too

Everything around me
just reminds me of you
Yes, you!

*Instrumental*

Bridge:
Maybe I look like a fool dancing in the rain
Maybe it's hard to forget the pain
but rain or sunshine in my summer I don't want to care anymore
All I want to do, is to thank you

Ends with chorus
___________________________________________

And as usual, here comes the long story, so that I can refer to this one day and laugh at my own innocent 19-years-old way of thinking.

You might have your own interpretation, you might see this as another typical love song, you might feel geli about the lyrics (haha) but chill, chill, I don't write stupid love songs (well maybe I do, unintentionally).

I'm very particular about lyrics, I don't only listen to songs just for fun, that's one of the reasons I write lyrics for myself. Sometimes I just can't find a song that really tells about my feelings.

The reason I chose "Raindrops in My Summer" as the title is because I love songs and poems that talk about seasons. To me, Raindrops in Summer symbolises something good, yet bad, something you can love, yet hate, and I think it carries the meaning of the whole thing I'm trying to say in this song. In life, there's always a person who can be harsh to you, scold you, neglect you, abandon you, or ignore you, but when you love that person, you can never really hate them. I'm not talking about lovers here. Or crushes. I'm talking about other categories of people and I leave that one for you to figure out.

My first listener didn't like this song because she said it sounds like another depressing love song.

But I can assure you that this song is very different from the others songs I've written, mainly because I tried to avoid direct usage of words in conveying my meaning because I didn't want to make everything too clear. Every single feeling, every single thoughts have been linked with the surroundings - the things you see and do on a typical day - step on dry leaves, watch the sunset, hum songs, tap your feet, etc. The only two clear things are the end of the chorus and the end of the bridge.

I also managed to write something for the bridge, which is not normal for me to do because I always run out of ideas. I figured out an instrumental solo on my guitar as well, but since I don't have someone to help me play that part (considering that I need to play the rhythm at the same time), I had to omit it while recording.

I love this song, but still I think gone are the days when I can write something as good as Smell the Rain. (I said 'good', not 'great' - yes, I know the difference between those two). XD

Will upload this once I get 20 views for the previous song. No kidding. Lol.

Time to sleeeeeeeep.

The Depressing Love Song

Here you go, lovely readers. Just a depressing song written last March during the mid semester break while I was having a flu. You can find the story behind the song somewhere in my March blog posts. No, this isn't a song written specially for anyone, and no, I was/am not in love.

I need to start searching for someone to sing my songs for me. But no one would like to.

Haha.

The (Very) Old Song

Took me nearly two years to finally record it properly.

This is the SPM song I've been showing off to a lot of friends (can't remember who), it isn't a really good one, but I remember the fun I had while trying to figure out the words that rhyme and the excitement of completing it before SPM. I also remember those innocent days when completing a song in 3 days seemed to be a very huge achievement XD

Sadly, I never got to figure out the correct key I should sing in, so here you go, don't tell me I didn't remind you earlier on how bad my voice can be.

I'm happy I wrote something like this two years ago.Haha.

Here's the story behind the song:

Midnight Breeze (Original)

In a good mood to upload this. Haha.

Don't get me wrong. I'm here, sitting alone at almost 3am because I have a Bio report to be done and trillions of books to be flipped through before my finals next Monday.

..but yeah..somehow..I ended up taking a short break. Just a short break.

Enjoy my lullaby ;)

Midnight Breeze

Midnight Breeze

[Chorus]
It was that midnight breeze
that showed me how You love me
It was that darkness
which told me to seek You even dearly
and as I see the lightning coming
all the trees are waving
The smell of the laundry
At the balcony
and this moment of discovery
Just swept away my agony

[Verse 1]
Forgive me for the times I've ran away
All the days I felt that no one cared
Tried to shut my ears and drift away

[Verse 2]
But You have never gave up on my weaknesses
Though sometimes I stumble I will not fall (Psalm 37:24)
You even listen to my silent calls

[Pre-chorus] - Psalm 36:5
Your unfailing love is as vast as the heavens
Your faithfulness like the sky, it's endless

*Repeat Chorus*

[Verse 3]
I'll never be afraid for I can trust in You
For all the things I fail to understand
I learn to put my faith in Your plans

*Repeat Pre-chorus and Chorus*

Story-telling time.

This is my first song not written to convey my feelings to men. It wasn't planned to be this way, but I believe inspiration doesn't come just because you want it to come. Inspiration comes when it comes and that's it. It cannot be forced like learning Maths and Science :P

It all started last Friday night when I came back from Homes and discovered that the whole laman of my block was experiencing blackout. Jokingly, as I walked towards my block, I told my two seniors that "oh, maybe I can write a song later on".

Talking about power of confession, it really did happen. I switched on my laptop and planned to go online in the dark, but the battery was dying. I couldn't sleep so I decided to just sit in the dark, alone, for all of my housemates had already went to bed.

At that moment, I came to realise that even if I was sleepy, it would be almost impossible to sleep, because it was incredibly hot without the fans.

...then came the sudden midnight breeze.

I took out my guitar from its bag, started plucking some random chords that suited my melancholic mood, and that first phrase came into my mind..

"It was that midnight breeze"

...and I always have this idea that the wind is some sort of a comfort God gives to us, especially when we are down and it comes all out of a sudden.

So I continued writing in the dark. Then in just a few seconds, I dragged my chair outside to the balcony, turned my bucket upside down (as a place to put my feet), grabbed my mini torchlight, and kept on repeating everything over and over again until I got what sounded nice to my ears.

Picture taken (of course) after the electricity came back.
If anyone's a fan of my music (perasan case), they will notice that I use my sense of smell too, most of the time. So here, you find "the smell of the laundry" because I just simply cannot omit it - it's part of the scene and the setting and the thing that activated my brain. By the way, it's actually the smell of downy fabric softener.

I got stuck after finishing my chorus and mosquitoes were partying around me. I almost stopped writing, but as I lifted up my head to observe my surroundings for any possible inspiration, something interesting caught my eyes.

I saw a cat across my block. It was running very fast.

So that line came into my mind.

"Forgive me for the times I've ran away".

And I tried to relate it with my past situations. The lessons that I've learnt.

Anyway, I left the song hanging after the second verse, not until tonight when I decided to continue and finish everything up. I almost gave up on this song. But a few hours ago, I felt so stressed up that I couldn't understand a single thing  I was reading. My housemates have been studying literally since before I woke up this morning. I felt disappointed with myself and even thought of banging my head on the bedroom wall, honestly.

But.that.sudden.midnight.breeze.came.again.

I opened up my Bible, and found Psalm 36:5 being highlighted.

I added one final verse and there you have it.

My 7th (completed) song.
My 4th song written in Akasia this year.
My 1st song not written to show my feelings towards people.

Close Your Ears. No, Don't.

[Story behind the song can be found in my post sometime in January]

Just kidding. Tell me what you honestly think about it. It may sound good to me but not to you, so yeah, one thing about writing songs is that it makes me perasan sometimes and I don't want to grow perasan if it's actually not good. Haha. I believe improvement will come with time and experience, so yeah, it's better for me to keep on uploading so that one day I can look back and say..

"Oh no, why did I upload it in the first place?"

or maybe something better like..

"Oh wow, last time I used to sing/play/compose like that..now I'm getting better." (Self-motivation). XP

Teehee. Just me having some little extra dose of perasan-ness and hyperness. Anyway, enjoy. I write songs not only for me to listen to, but for everyone who wants to listen. (I'd rather be perasan than syok sendiri). So yeah go listen and make sure you put the most minimum volume (but not mute, of course). I accept comments like "improve your singing", "try something new with your lyrics", etc. Help me to do better next time! :)

Thank you for sacrificing your broadband. One more coming very soon, hopefully.

The Depressing (Love) Song

I finally completed it a few minutes ago. Yes, I need to be alone when I'm working out on a song because it's quite embarrassing to keep on strumming the same thing and mumbling random words.

There are a few things to clarify before I share this song here.

1. I am not in love.
2. This song isn't written for any particular person.
3. Yes, you'll find cliché lyrics.
4. This song is not written for any particular person.
5. I am not in love.

So here it goes:

HIDDEN FEELINGS
a song about..err..hidden feelings

Verses:
Time is cruel
We're so close
Yet still so far
Acting cool
I'm no good
Yet still I try
For you
Oh, I hope you had a clue.

(Whoaah) Feeling blue
Looking at the night sky
Thinking if you're
doing so too
Wondering if it'll
be the same if you knew
Oh, you just don't have a clue.

Pre-chorus:
I guess it doesn't really matter
'Cause there are things I should learn to hide
For all the dreams that seem to shatter
You may not know the times I've lied

Chorus:
You never know
That I'm thinking of you
but what if you had to go?
and are these feeling true?

Maybe it's worth a try?

Like a dandelion
Floating in the sky
Sometimes I wish these feelings
will find somewhere to hide

(but I know)
There are things I can't deny

Repeat the whole thing.
End with first verse.

-----------

So yeah..as usual..story-telling time. Bear with me.

I wasn't planning to complain that "time is cruel". It just happened to fit the sound of the chords which I were plucking. The paradox in the second and third lines were actually more like something I simply threw into the lyrics.

Honestly speaking, I don't really think that the lyrics deserve this melody. I've been working out on this melody for quite a while and I like it more that any of my previous songs, but it's rather sad that I had to fit in these depressing lyrics into it.

It was midnight when I wrote "looking at the night sky".

Chorus is so depressing, I know.

Most of the things don't rhyme. I know T_T

Dandelion's there for a reason. I've been loving dandelion seeds for all my life. And a few days ago I almost caught one flying in front the balcony. I failed. So I was frustrated and it got stuck inside my mind.

I'm about to turn 19, I'm a girl and I have crushes. What's so unusual about that?

We all have one (or two, or three), admit it.

So this song is dedicated to those who are keeping hidden feelings, wishing that someday, somehow, errr..I dunno how to continue.

Again, I have to say this.

I am not in love. This song just happened to be like this.

and it's up to you to have your own interpretation.

..and actually I was planning to improve a little bit by writing longer lyrics but it turned out the other way round, in fact these are the shortest lyrics I've ever written.

Will probably start recording if I have the chance to be left alone in the room or once my flu goes away. Or maybe I won't. Depends on my mood because usually I'll find out that I write bad songs after listening to it for quite a number of times.

I doubt that I can sing it anyway, because it's in the key of D, and is very high for me till I feel like I'm screaming rather than singing. I have this impression that I sound like the vocalist of my favourite band 25 Hours. Very high pitch. But mine's annoyingly high. I can't lower the key because it involves Dsus2 and Dsus4 which sound surprisingly good when I pluck them. I don't know how will it sound like if I change them to Csus2 or Csus4. Heck, I don't even know how those chords look like :S

I shall think about it first.

Bye.

Uh?

I just wanna have fun.
..and I write songs based on the same reasons why I blog.

To express myself..

and I somehow wanna write songs that can make people smile. Not there yet, but will continue doing this.

and I guess it's important to get the reasons right first before everything...

and I know the reasons why I wrote this and shared this.

Enjoy. :)

Alone with a Song

I somehow love being alone.

It makes me think more, and during these times inspiration blooms. It's not that I don't find inspiration when I'm with a bunch of people. In fact, it's when I'm with people I get the inspiration. When I'm alone I expand/ develop the inspiration and make it into something..like a song.

So here it goes. I don't really have a good title for it, but I think Rubbing Shoulders would do well, even though it is not meant to mean the idiom 'to rub shoulders with somebody'. I take it rather literally here.

Rubbing Shoulders
a song about life, memories and friendship

Verse 1
When life throws you into different places
that's when you get to see a lot of faces
but then eventually we'll have to say goodbye
and we'll be just like birds, flying in the sky

Pre-chorus
And you wonder
How it's gonna be
When we leave this place today
are the memories here to stay?

Chorus
Rubbing shoulders with a thousand people
Forming bonds, as time goes by
It's strange that strangers can become as close as siblings
and there are
a million reasons to believe that goodbye's just the start
so it should be...
Till we meet again!

Verse
I guess it's weird that time flies and people come and go
It's just like seeing sunshine, now you see the snow

Pre-chorus
And I ponder
Life is sometimes funny
When you get to say hello
Next day you get ready to go

Chorus
Rubbing shoulders with a thousand people
Forming bonds, as time goes by
It's strange that strangers can become as close as siblings
and there are
a million reasons to believe that goodbye's just the start
so it should be...
Till we meet again!

*********

Try to guess where did I get the idea of the first line of the chorus? Kepong Market.

It gave me an idea that in life, we get to know a lot of people but most of them will leave, or maybe it's us who leave a place. Then we meet new people. Sometimes we pass by people and smile, or offer help, and that's probably the last time we see that person.

It's rather different for most of us - some were born and raised in different places, some grow up in the very same place, hence there's a special bond with the people around. I spent the last weekend with a friend of mine who has been born and raised in the same area. I like that fact very much. It's fun and nostalgic - and the people around are the same people who witnessed your stages of life.

My life story is totally different. Moving from places to places makes me ponder on who are my friends - I don't have a friend who grew up together with me (besides my siblings). Life revolves around making new relationships, leaving, and building new ones.

College life teaches me the same thing. Farewells are inevitable.

..but sometimes people still meet again in this world!

Smell the Rain

9th January 2012, 5pm, Akasia.

Just another song. Some verses don't rhyme. Inspired by the rain. Weird title, I know..but it wasn't intended to copy Yiruma's Kiss the Rain. I believe some verses also sound familiar to other songs I listened to, but I cannot recall which song :P

Anyway, here you go:

SMELL THE RAIN
(an emo-turned-happy song)

We're far apart, but I believe
When you look outside the window
Gone is your sorrow.

The chirping birds might sound all the same
but I'm among one of them
Telling you that I came.

Pre-chorus:
Enjoy the smell of the rain
The green leaves that are falling down
I'll take away all your pain
and you know, that I'm all around.

Chorus:
Hold on, put a smile
Life's too short, don't be so fragile
Smell the rain
and don't complain.

Sing, dance, feel the wind
Spin around and try to catch the leaves
No one knows
How exactly fun it feels like

Bridge:
Treasure every single memory
Laugh aloud, join the crowd
Yea, time passes by so quickly
Seasons change, there's no doubt..

Chorus

Story behind the song

Was alone, came back from college earlier than the others, so yeah. Inspiration came when it suddenly rained and my nose detected the awesome smell of the rain. Admit it. Everyone loves the smell when it's raining. I know it's not the smell of the rain itself, but gah, just simply wrote everything down after the first line appeared into my mind.

It was actually an emo-ish song at first, but turned out that the lyrics of the chorus part became a bit happy-ish, so I changed some emo lines:
  • "We're far apart" was originally "You're far away". Still emo, I know.
  • "I'll be the smell of the rain" was changed to "Enjoy the smell of the rain". Original line was...awkward, because I later said "Smell the rain and don't complain". I think you got what I'm trying to say :P
  • Green leaves don't fall, probably. But I don't want to change it to brown.
  • Actually the situation of the song was something like this: the persona (cewah..) is emo-ing and the writer is trying to make the persona happy by reminding the persona that the writer is in everything that the persona sees/feels. I was picturing the writer as a dead person actually, at first..and the writer is me.Too emo. Cannot..cannot..
Personally, I like this song. (Perasan lagi..).. :P

My Original SPM Song: 30 Days

Ideas and inspiration flow during the weirdest time. When thrill, stress and anxiety conquers yourself, creativity blooms and blossoms.

OK, enough with the long intro. I've been beating around the bush too much lately. Here's the song:

30 Days (an SPM song)

Looking through the window
One Sunday evening
My calendar's full of crosses
and it carries a meaning

What's acceleration?
In Physics we can see
but just like Miss Kho says
hey, "Why don't you tell me?"

[Pre-chorus]
'Coz time is passing by so fast
and the day will come to me at last
In a matter of time, today will become the past...(1, 2, 3, 4!)

[Chorus]
I can't believe it's 30 days to go
My heart is pounding
and I wish that day will never show

And maybe 30 days is just too short
When everyday is spent by laughing and joking a lot
How can I forget the joy we got
in 30 days...

My reference books and papers
are lying on the floor
and I just start cramming
the moment once I close my door

In school you see me laughing
but just like you, I'm scared
One thing's for sure - I'm fighting
Till I can get so well-prepared

[Repeat pre-chorus and chorus]

[solo]

[Repeat chorus]

Trivia:
  • I started writing this song on 24th October 2010 - exactly 30 days before SPM and completed it three days later.
  • This is my second self-written song after "Thank You for the Day".
  • I've never learnt music formally, so this song isn't so great :P
  • Miss Kho in verse 2 is my EST teacher. She's awesome. And yep, that's a quote from her in the following line.
  • There must be grammatical errors in the song. (Which I cannot detect so far).
  • Over all I'm happy with this song. It's better than my first one and at least it rhymes :P

In loving memory of SPM 2010. May my soul be a happy one when the results are released.
